Urban Forest Project

Peter Kuper

When I was approached to create a banner on the subject of trees my first thought was to create a single image but very quickly realized a comic strip could better tell a larger story—and since the banner is a story large... Trees was a great springboard topic. They represent environment and life. Without them there is no air so we have a fundamental and dependent relationship to them. They are all around us yet invisible. My focus was on how trees are perceived—to the animals they're home, to some forests are a beautiful place, yet others see them in dollars and sense that trees are only there to be converted to hard cold cash. It's remarkable that something that takes so long to grow can be taken away in a blink—not much longer than it takes to read a comic strip.
